Sea Days. Indonesian Crew Show.

It has been a quiet 2 days and I've been trying to catch up on sleep. As usual, the gentle rocking motion of the ship, as it sails, makes me tired.

Yesterday I attended the Indonesian crew's performance which took place in the showroom just after lunch.  There was a mixture of singing and dancing.

The show opened with the Indonesian crew band playing some music and this was followed by a welcoming dance.  This is similar to the welcome dance done when the ship arrived in Denpasar, Bali and is usually performed by women.  For some reason the Indonesian ladies on the ship didn't know the dance so one of the lads performed it - complete with a very nice outfit apart from a white t-shirt underneath his colourful top!  He took his role very seriously and danced rather well.

During the concert I could tell that one crew member hadn't attended many rehearsals because he kept looking at his colleagues in order to see what movements they were making - and was behind time but still kept grinning.   Derry, our cabin steward, sang and had a really nice voice.

Second to last item on the agenda was the Ramayana story about Prince Rama's quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana with the help of an army of monkeys.  I ended up looking up the story in order to get the full gist of it, as described in the shortened version on this website:

At the end of the performance the staff came out with wooden instruments which they played.  They seemed to enjoy themselves.   The crew really did their best with their music.  The 'conductor' brought out an easel with a big sheet of music on it and pointed to the notes as they played in time or out of time to those who played the drums, electric guitar and electric piano.  The guests loved the show and it was nice for them to recognise staff they had come to know during the crew.  It brought a 'buzz' to the day!

Tomorrow we arrive in Adelaide and will have the chance to step on land.

Aahh, get out the defibrillator (his "paddles" are flipflops!) ;-)
