View towards Heiligenblut from the across the top of the valley |
During the night there was a good thunderstorm with thunder and lightning. Unfortunately the bedroom roof started to leak during the night so Paul and I managed to shove the bed to one side and placed a cup underneath the leak. Then our neighbouring guests rocked up and made quite a racket - extremely heavy footsteps up and down, up and down the stairs, talking loudly and one of the kids began hitting the wall. I was furious and threw a small plastic container, hard, at the wall. The kid hitting the wall stopped. And things quietened down.

The tiny chapel |
After breakfast we were going to head back up the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße to do a bit of walking to a glacier lake but diverted from Helligebloed to explore the road further into the valley, a road parallel but lower than one of the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße roads. The area was really beautiful so we decided to stop there and then and go for a walk, loading our rucksacks with water and something to eat as well as our rain suits.
On the walker's board map there was an outlook post and a chapel that we could walk (Heilwasser Bricciusweg
) to and then walk back down again. The map route indicated an estimated timeline too - plenty of time to get back and hit the road again.
We had a lovely walk to the outlook point and on to the chapel where we stopped to have lunch on a bench outside, and also popped inside the chapel to have a looksy. It was really sweet despite it being very remote. The walking board had shown a waterfall a bit further along the track so we decided to press on and see it then backtrack and return via the same route to the car. The waterfall was beautiful, massive boulders had been thrown down the valley, making the riverbed look even more chunkier and rugged. The onward path looked intriguing despite being steep so we continued on. We almost regretted it. By now we had passed the half-way point so decided to continue on the paths, using a GPS tracker, to complete a circular route back to the car. The path seemed to go on upwards forever and we were very much out of puff when we got to the top. We stopped for a quick snack and water break and then headed down the mountain. The track disappeared and was replaced by a forest road being cut into the side of the mountain. We followed it until we met up with the relevant walking path and continued along a stream for a bit, crossing it via wooden bridge and then finally back up the hill to the road and our car. No doubt we will be a bit stiff tomorrow!
We decided to press on with our journey from Helligebloed southwards, chasing rainbows on the way, and booked in at a B&B, Feichterhof, in Bad Kleinkircheim; a ski resort town with thermal springs.
When we arrived at Feichterhof we discovered that we had been upgraded to a bigger room which also had a kitchenette area. We will be charged an extra tariff if we use the kitchenette but I don't think we will need to. The views from our window over the valley are beautiful. We have decided to stay two nights to make use of the thermal baths and spa.
