Weinstein am Inn - 2 castles facing each other across the river |
We took a meandering drive towards Austria, stopping just across the border beside the river 'Inn' at Weinstein am Inn where we had beautiful views of 2 castles on opposite sides of the river.

Medieval town of Scharding |
We also stopped in a medieval town called Scharding in order to pick up a map of Austria and to also have a wander around. We visited a church which was lovely inside. On heading back to the car we took a different route and went outside the city walls, walking beside the river back to the car. We stopped to have some ice cream that was being sold near the riverbank and sat down to relax. We were joined by an inquisitive duck who had hoped for a crumb or two, and a bee that took great interest in my ice cream and decided to land on it. Once it had had its sweet icy fill, she flew away - no doubt to bring friends back later! The town was interesting and the layout seemed to be characteristic of other medieval towns that we passed through in the area.

We saw this pretty place on the outskirts of Salzburg |
From Scharding we decided to continue following the river Inn in a westerly direction as we thought it would be a pretty enough route. Unfortunately it wasn't and when we got to Braunau am Inn we decided to head southwards towards Salzburg, our satnav taking us on a merry route which we had to sometimes had to ignore otherwise we wouldn't have got anywhere.
On the outskirts of Salzburg we had to stop and do an internet search for a hotel. The area was expensive so it was out of the question. Eventually we found a place south east of Salzburg, Privatpension Haus Kathrin, near Ruhdorf, a small ski resort town. Mum and dad weren't in when we arrived but their teenage son did a good job in checking us in and showing us our room. It was very much a family home that was partly converted into lodgings, and children were playing outside.
Tomorrow we would like to see the Hohenwerfen Castle and then see what happens after that.
