On the Road & a Castle

Veste Coburg

We were not happy bunnies this morning.  We got woken up at 8am by workmen climbing scaffolding outside our room and starting to render the wall which happened to be right next to our headboard.  We couldn't sleep in so we ended up starting our day earlier than expected.  When we got to the reception desk to check-out but nobody was there, no notice on the counter, no bell...  We went upstairs to the breakfast room but we couldn't see any management even though there was a buffet-style breakfast and people were eating.  A bit fed up, we left the key on reception desk and walked out.  Yes we needed to pay the bill but we also wanted to get on the road.  Paul will no doubt get a call or an email from the hotel in due course but he is ready for them!

We decided to head in a north-westerly direction to Eisenach to see a castle and then on to Erfurt to see a cathedral but due to torrential rain we turned around, tails between our legs, and headed south. On the way south we saw a large castle on a hill just outside Coburg.  Signs for it were a bit elusive and we relied on our satnav to help us until we saw road signs.

Veste Coburg was a castle museum but had an special exhibition on show that didn't really make logical sense because it all over the show, which was a pity.  The place itself was lovely and there was certainly lots to see.  It was chilly so we decided not to visit the dungeons.

Time was getting on so we had to find a place for the night, ending up just south east of Bamburg in the hamlet of Eggolsheim at a BnB - Landgastof Zehner.  It's a cosy place with our room being under the eaves.

Time for bed.  Tomorrow is another day.
