Back to Beautiful Großglockner Hochalpenstraße

We desperately needed to find a launderette to do our laundry.  Armed with knowledge from our brief internet search, we took our bagged stuff and were prepared to sit for a couple of hours.  We got to the place - and discovered it was actually an UNDERWEAR shop!  Somewhere along the line 'launderette' had got lost in translation.  Ooops.

We weren't too far from Grossglockner Pass (Großglockner Hochalpenstraße) so we decided to go through it despite having been there 3 weeks earlier.  The weather forecast was good for at least the morning, compared to rain and cold the last time, and we would be doing the journey in reverse.  At the Biker's Stop at the top of the pass we saw rooms being advertised as available at Edelweißspitze and made enquiries.  Unfortunately rooms and cottages were fully booked.  The sign was only to draw people in to enquire.  It is best to book in advance.  It was a big pity because it would have been lovely to have stayed there overnight with breathtaking views and fresh clear, clean air.  Another time perhaps.

The weather held out beautifully for us and we were able to see more of the Grossglockner park and had views of a dying glacier.  We had
Glacier lake
thought about taking a funicular down to towards the glacier lake in the valley below but  it started to rain.

We had dinner in Heiligenblut at the bottom of the Pass.  We had flammekeutchen (a bit like pizza but with a wafer-thin base and usually only has ham and cheese for topping) at a biker's cafe - yum..  It was delicious.

Fereinhof "Oberer Gollmitzer"
Our hotel for the night is an old farm house, Fereinhof "Oberer Gollmitzer", up a steep very narrow mountain road not far from the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße.  I was driving as Paul decided to have a second drink at whilst at the cafe.  I thought I would wet my knickers - driving along the road nearly freaked me out.  Paul, sitting in the passenger seat on the cliff-side of the car, was a bit freaked out too, praying that I would keep the car on the road!  A lovely old lady gave us a very warm welcome as did a beautiful ginger and white kitty who proceeded to have a good purr in my arms.  Paul took out some kitty treats and the cat was delighted, grabbing his fingers for more!

Our room at the farmhouse is clean, comfortable but basic.  And we have to share a toilet and bathroom with other guests. But at least we have a roof over our head for the night so we can't complain.
