We ended up getting dressed and going for a drive into the mountains. Our route took us through hillside villages, around hairpin bends, along roads that needed patching up but it was lovely. Photographs cannot do the scenery justice. We stopped at a village for lunch and then plotted our route back towards the southwest coastline and back to the camp.
Although the part of the island that we drove through is covered in trees and bush, the earth is very very dry. We only saw one river with water in it, the rest are empty. I guess the rainy season is still to come, but I could be wrong.
It was good to get back to the campsite before dark but not in time to stop being bitten by tiny critters again. I'm now sporting a hot itchy arm below my right elbow, the area swelling steadily and looking red, and another huge spreading lump behind my right thigh. Time for some more antihistamines!
